I mis-spelled Machiavelli until a very late stage of my first book. And in the same book, the phrase "leg wrangling" survived several drafts, until my father picked up on it. It should have been "legal wrangling". Though leg wrangling does sound more fun.

@Mil - But it might be too late anyway - I don't think I could read the first version of 'Freedom' without being distracted. But perhaps only for the first few pages? Then it might wear off, freeing one to become a normal reader again. (Freedom indeed.)

@Tracy - My sentiments exactly! Hooray for timewasting. One of my favourite quotes is from Kurt Vonnegut - "We are put on this earth to fart around. DOn't let anyone tell you otherwise."Sarah Blogwell's Bakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06414093702208878056noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847383858005493909.post-7765340463056729032010-10-04T12:54:47.581+01:002010-10-04T12:54:47.581+01:00It sort of happened to me. The names of Alfred Russel Wallace and Sir Mountstuart Grant-Duff are consistently mis-spelled throughout my biography of Sir John Lubbock, and this was picked up by a reviewer. The mistakes were certainly not present in any of my submitted drafts, but I may well have missed them in correcting the galley proofs. I'll certainly be more careful next time!Mark Pattonhttp://www.mark-patton.co.uknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847383858005493909.post-62372527199127407012010-10-03T12:56:15.805+01:002010-10-03T12:56:15.805+01:00And then, it is also if one is looking for pebbles...And then, it is also if one is looking for pebbles to be out of place. And thus I think Blake Morrison did the gentlemanly act of not prompting people to start looking for anomalies. This may actually give Franzen's publishers required time to publish a revision as soon as budgets permit.Mil Joshihttp://blog.mindgap.innoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847383858005493909.post-74021821842862634322010-10-03T12:18:05.154+01:002010-10-03T12:18:05.154+01:00"It proved quite false and there is nothing a..."It proved quite false and there is nothing about it in this book." Oh yes, that's a wonderful sentence. I love projects that are (or seem) a complete waste of time. Because they never are, really.Tracy Sorensenhttp://www.squawkingalah.com.aunoreply@blogger.com
