Gliding lightly

I'll be on BBC Radio 4's 'Start the Week' on Monday 25 January, with Will Self, Steve Jones and Charles Hazlewood.  Already nail-chompingly excited. If I carry on like this all weekend, by Monday morning I will have nibbled all the way up my arms, round my collarbones and back to my teeth.  But I love this sort of thing: the talk, the elation, the chance to blither about Montaigne.

"Speech belongs half to the speaker, half to the listener." - Montaigne, "Of Experience".

"We must glide over this world a bit lightly and on the surface." - Montaigne, "Of Vanity".

Had me interested... though the 'old' text of the essays at Gutenberg didn't fill me with glee. Or have me pondering. Any suggestions for a gentle intro chapter?

I guess I'll have to buy your book :-)

Hi Sarah, I caught you on 'Start the Week' as I drove across country to work on Monday last and was captivated by you and Michel! A new direction for me - thank you for opening the door.

Hello! Glad the show caught your interest..

@KT@nosejam - I couldn't agree with you more about Melville by the way!

@DaveP - the older translations can be a little less approachable than the modern ones, though some have their charms (especially John Florio's 1603 version). I'd recommend the Penguin Classics selection translated by J.M. Cohen - much easier to get into. Hope you enjoy!

What on earth have 'conspiracy theories' and man-induced earthquakes got to do with Montaigne? Get a grip.

Hello again Sarah - just to confuse you i'm logged in as 'me' rather than Kilgore.... anyway just to say having bought 'How to Live' I am totally enthralled and hooked. Thank you so much for showing me the way.

So i'm following twice now - as Kilgore and Matthew Laight - I think I should perhaps stick to the more sensible option, what do you think?

You have inspired me Sarah - thank you.
